Inspect the float switch visually for signs of wear, damage or obstructions. The float should be free to move up and down without hindrance, but if it’s stuck in one position or another, this could indicate a problem with the switch itself. If the float is obstructed or damaged, it will require replacement.

You should also check the float switch for signs of corrosion. The float is exposed to a high amount of moisture and chemicals, making it susceptible to rust or corrosion. Choose a corrosion-resistant material like stainless steel or polypropylene to minimize this risk.

If your float switch is tripped frequently, this may be caused by a clogged drain line. A clogged drain line causes the water level in the drain pan to rise, which can trigger the float switch. Ensure that the drain line is free of any obstructions and clean it periodically to avoid this issue.

Inspect the Discharge Pipe

The discharge line is responsible for transporting water away from the home after it’s been pumped out. This is why it’s important to keep it clear of blockages that can prevent it from working properly. The easiest way to check for this is by turning off the power to the sump pump and then removing any visible debris from it. If there’s a lot of blockage, you can also use a plumber’s snake to clear it out.

It’s also important to make sure that the discharge pipe is pointed well away from your foundation, ideally at least 10 feet. This is because the buried line relies on gravity to drain and it could freeze if it’s too close. If you live in an area where the temperatures regularly drop below freezing, we recommend that you install a grated discharge line attachment like IceGuard at the beginning of the line so that water can escape when it freezes.

Alternatively, you can also install a Lawnscape Outlet in your yard to provide a more permanent solution. However, this can only be used in yards with some positive slope so that the discharge line doesn’t get buried by debris or mud. In addition, you’ll need to check the plugged outlet often as it can become covered by leaves or grass. It can also be affected by backflow from the sewer system.

Test the Pump
